In a recent discussion on the Big Homies House podcast, Nigerian artist Davido shared his concerns about the growing interest among African Americans in relocating to Africa. He acknowledged the continent’s appeal, especially as a cultural and ancestral hub, but highlighted the economic and infrastructural challenges that make life in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, difficult.
Davido mentioned Nigeria’s economic struggles, noting that “things are not good back home,” with a key example being the paradox of Nigerians paying high prices for oil despite the country being a major oil producer. He expressed that while Africa is gaining recognition globally, especially in entertainment and tourism, this increasing popularity often obscures the underlying issues that residents face daily.
Through his comments, Davido encouraged African Americans and others considering a move to Africa to look beyond the “smokescreen” of Africa’s allure and understand the realities of living on the continent. His statements aim to offer a balanced perspective on the opportunities and challenges of life in Africa.
“We Nigerians, the exchange rate is messed up, the oil prices is too high. Imagine a country producing oil and we are paying more for oil than countries importing it. We do not have the best leaders, and that is a fact,”
“My aim is to show off the little parts and leave the slums out of the frame,”, he added.
