Renowned Nigerian director Andy Boyo, a dedicated member of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, recently opened up about his deep admiration for the legendary musician and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, even recounting how Felaâs influence once led to his expulsion from school. Boyo is now embarking on an ambitious journey to bring the story of the Afrobeat pioneer to life in a biographical film, which has been three years in the making.
Fela Kuti, who passed away in 1997, is celebrated as the creator of Afrobeat, a genre blending West African rhythms with elements of American funk and jazz. Boyoâs much-anticipated film, set to begin production in 2025, will be shot across Nigeria, the UK, and the US. After securing the rights to Felaâs music, Boyo promises an immersive portrayal of the musicianâs life, including a star-studded cast that will feature 27 actresses in the roles of Felaâs wives.
Boyo, known for directing popular films such as Untamed and Spirit of Assassins, will also serve as the director, writer, and producer for the biographical project. Reflecting on his commitment, he described the film as âa labor of love,â underscoring his passion for sharing Felaâs story with a new generation.
Boyo said:Â âFela has always been my passion, I was expelled from Glorious College, Ibadan, for sneaking out to watch him perform at the University of Ibadanâs âHavana Night.â Fela was my mentor; I admired his personality and music. When I returned to the school, I got expelled from school.â
The film will showcase Felaâs life, struggles, and triumphs as the king of Afrobeats. With Boyoâs talent and dedication, this movie aims to change the landscape of cinema and push the boundaries of African film.
