Rey Misterio Sr., the legendary Mexican wrestler and uncle of WWE superstar Rey Mysterio Jr., has passed away at the age of 66. His death, which occurred on December 20, 2024, was confirmed by his family and the Mexican wrestling organization Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.
Born Miguel Ángel López Díaz, Misterio Sr. was a trailblazer in Mexico’s lucha libre wrestling scene. With a career spanning nearly five decades, he became a pivotal figure in the wrestling world, performing for esteemed organizations such as Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Association (WWA).
Beyond his own remarkable achievements, Rey Misterio Sr. was revered as a mentor who shaped the careers of many wrestling stars. He played an instrumental role in training his nephew, WWE’s Rey Mysterio Jr., a three-time world champion, as well as other prominent figures like Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, and Damian 666.
The cause of Misterio Sr.’s death has not been disclosed, and it comes shortly after the recent passing of Robert Gutierrez, Rey Mysterio Jr.’s father.
Aalyah Gutierrez, Rey Mysterio Jr.’s daughter, paid a heartfelt tribute to her great-uncle on social media, expressing her deep admiration and gratitude for his legacy.
Rey Misterio Sr. leaves behind an indelible mark on the wrestling world, both as a performer and a mentor, ensuring that his influence will endure for generations to come.
“Eternally grateful for you,” she wrote. “Without you, my dad wouldn’t be the person or fighter he is today. Rest in peace, uncle.”
