The Ibadan funfair, intended as a joyful Christmas celebration for children, has taken a devastating turn, leaving a community in grief and disbelief. Organized by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, former queen of the Ooni of Ife, and Oriyomi Hamzat, an Ibadan-based broadcaster, the event spiraled into chaos when the number of attendees exceeded expectations.

Originally designed to entertain 5,000 children, the funfair drew over 7,500 participants, leading to overcrowding and a tragic stampede that claimed the lives of several children. The mismanagement of the crowd has left not only a trail of young lives lost but also shattered trust within the mourning community.

In the aftermath, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has taken personal charge of the investigation. Prophetess Naomi Silekunola was detained in connection with the incident but reportedly fainted due to immense pressure. She was rushed to the Police Hospital in Eleyele for urgent medical attention. Oriyomi Hamzat, head of Agidigbo FM, also required medical care and has been hospitalized.

The tragedy occurred at Islamic High School, Basorun, during what was meant to be a cheerful end-of-year event. Instead, it descended into unimaginable chaos and sorrow, leaving families and the community devastated.

A haunting video has since surfaced, capturing the aftermath. The path to the venue is littered with poignant reminders of innocence—tiny shoes, hats, and scattered clothing left behind in the frenzied escape. These heartbreaking images serve as a stark reminder of the catastrophe and the pressing need for accountability and reform to prevent such tragedies in the future.
