Nigerian heavyweight singer and performer Ivine Ikubor, better known by her stage as Rema, talked candidly about her competition with Afrobeats superstars Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy.
During a recent interview for the latest edition of “Thoughts In A Culli,” the Mavin/Jonzing artist, whose sophomore album “HEIS” is still receiving positive reviews, talked about his career, personal life, and the Afrobeats genre with the UK media site GRM Daily.
The show host Post, who is also the CEO of GRM Daily, asked Rema how he competes with Afrobeats heavyweights. Rema, 24, responded that he views himself as very respectful and does not see the need to flex on his colleagues. Post considered Rema to be one of the new Afrobeats ‘Big Four’.
Rema went into further detail about his perspective, saying that he prefers to concentrate on himself and does not allow fans who pit artists against one another into his head.
The singer argues that he shouldn’t be so concerned in competing with Burna Boy, Wizkid, or Davido now that they are colleagues because he didn’t know them five years ago and doesn’t feel the need to “dunk on them.”
Rema continued by saying that although songs could imply that one musician is superior to another, he views music as just a sport and that people should love one another outside of the music industry.
