Born Miguel Ăngel LĂłpez DĂaz, Misterio Sr. was a trailblazer in Mexicoâs lucha libre wrestling scene. With a career spanning nearly five decades, he became a pivotal figure in the wrestling world, performing for esteemed organizations such as Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Association (WWA).
Beyond his own remarkable achievements, Rey Misterio Sr. was revered as a mentor who shaped the careers of many wrestling stars. He played an instrumental role in training his nephew, WWEâs Rey Mysterio Jr., a three-time world champion, as well as other prominent figures like Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, and Damian 666.
The cause of Misterio Sr.âs death has not been disclosed, and it comes shortly after the recent passing of Robert Gutierrez, Rey Mysterio Jr.âs father.
